Symposium on creation of art institutions in Africa opens in Dakar Wednesday - An international symposium on the creation of art institutions in Africa, being organized by the Raw Material Company, is due to open in Dakar, Senegal, on Wednesday, according to Ms. Koyo Kouoh, the company's artistic director.
She told journalists here on Monday that the purpose of the meeting is to assess the independent organizations created in the last 15 years and create a think tank to enable African art to contribute to the formation of a more critical opinion.
The 3-day symposium, organized in cooperation with the Goethe Institute and the German Federal Foundation for Culture, will provide a platform for discussion of case studies and experiences, while allowing interpretative analysis.
Representatives from many African countries will take part in the symposium, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Senegal.
'The African continent needs to develop its own institutional framework for the need of its cultural expressions,' the artistic director said. 'Historically, the artistic and cultural life in most African countries is driven by cultural institutions in Western countries such as France Germany, Britain, Spain and Portugal, among others.'
